Beginning with guitar lessons at age 5, Stephen quickly identified an affinity with music that would last a lifetime. His first show was at a school recital at age 6, but joining a band at 11 sealed the deal.
Throughout teen years he played in every band he could, from jazz to ska and rock and punk, eventually becoming the Music Captain in his senior year. Stephen attended Queensland University of Technology in 2003, but his first releases, with The Winnie Coopers, brought national recognition. He continued to play and tour, writing and recording with Another Day Down while he pursued his studio career. With continued success with local artists, Stephen purchased a Neve 5316 Console and Studer A80 Mkii Tape Machine for his new studio The Docking Station in 2010. Armed with this new (vintage) gear he experimented with all tape records, honing his ear and engineering skills to new heights, with underground records for Mr Maps, Skinny Jean, Re:Enactment and many other Australian acts, and mixing for The Middle East (Spunk) others.
In late 2012 Stephen left Australia for Europe, where he quickly became one of the head engineers at the newly re-vamped Wisseloord Studios. His first project was working with the esteemed Pat Leonard and Ilse Delange. That first release achieved huge success and ended up as a multi-platinum record. The next few years were incredibly fruitful for Stephen, achieving continued success and growing particularly as a mix-engineer. In 2014 Stephen gained management in the UK and began working further abroad, developing close working relationships with producers like John Alagia, Chris Keup and Ryan West. Working on the road, Stephen gained experience in many of the worlds largest studios, including Abbey Road, Avatar Studios, Electric Lady Studios and The Village Recorder among many others.
Finally settling into New York life in 2015 has brought Stephen to the most creative and exciting period of his career to date. He has been the lead producer for the Movement Tracks Project, bringing technology and music to combine with the health industry. The project won the 2017 Intelligent Health Award, and was a finalists for the 2018 SXSW Interactive Innovation Award. His engineering and producing career has continued to grow with work on the final 50 Shades of Grey soundtrack, and singles for Sigrid and Wingtip/Youngr among many others.
In 2018 Stephen began returning to composition and song-writing, working with artists from Republic Records, Universal Japan and many others, along with composing for corporate clients including Design Within Reach & KPMG.
